One of the selling points of HRT was reducing the risk of osteoporosis. This, once again is not a disease, it is a “thinning” of bones with age and lack of use. Osteoporosis has been turned into a disease needing lifelong treatment. It is almost ironic then that the next treatment after HRT is now also being found to have unexpected problems. Bisphosphonates are a group of drugs used for osteoporosis. They generate US $8 billion in revenue. There is now shown to be an association between long term (5 year) use of these drugs and osteonecrosis of the jaw. This is a painful condition where bone in the jaw “dies”. There is no treatment. We will see more of this in the coming years if prescription rates continue at current levels. It also is emerging that some types of fractures might be increased on the drug. So what is one to do? The best way to maintain bones is to look after them. This is not difficult. Here are five basics -
